Depending on who you are and where your interests lie, there are several action steps you care take to educate yourself and contribute to the effort to get labeling on genetically engineered foods. We all fall into one or more of the following five categories:

Consumers: Everyone should be concerned with how our foods are grown and prepared. While we don't all need to become political activists, we should all take some action to help get genetically engineered foods labeled.

Activists: Want to do more? Become a local leader in your city and state. Recruit others through organizing local meetings and seminars. Collect signatures on form letters at public events and fairs.

Retailers: Natural food stores and other progressive retail outlets are in a position to distribute a great deal of information to the public. All retailers are invited to join us as Retail Sponsors.

Companies: Many companies are opposing the use of genetically engineered ingredients in their products. Companies with organic ingredients should fight to protect their products from contamination by cross pollination from genetically engineered crops.

Media: If you are with the media, we invite you to get news about this important subject out to an unaware public. Educated consumers will elect government officials that will properly regulate genetically engineered foods.

Action Steps for each category:

Consumers:

Read literature:
1) Genetically Engineered Food & Your Health
2) Genetically Engineered Food & the Environment
3) Why Label Genetically Engineered Foods?

Activists:

Do all Consumer Action Steps above - As the saying goes, If you are going to "talk the talk" you need to "walk the walk." Taking the Consumer Action Steps serves as an example for others to do the same.

Make an appointment with a member of your City or County Council - Getting your city or county council to pass a Resolution in support of labeling genetically engineered is one of the best action steps you can take.

Make an appointment to meet with your state legislators - The Campaign is drafting labeling legislation to be introduced on a state level. See if you can get your state legislators to sponsor it in your state.

Meet with your federal legislators when possible - We each have two Senators and one House Representative. When they are home on breaks, they often hold public meetings and open forums. Attending such events may provide an opportunity to ask questions or even have a one to one talk.

Organize Local Events - Outreach into your community to educate others and engage them in activities to gather local support for the city and county Resolutions and the state and federal labeling legislation.
